Computer Networking Basics For Beginners

A computer network is a group of desktop computers or laptops and other computer networking devices such as printer, switch, router which are connected each other with the main purpose is to share or exchange data each other. In homes, this computer networking basics help you build a wireless networking to share a single internet connection with many computers, share other network resources such as printer, network storage with others.

This computer networking basics helps you understand the advantages of having a computer networking particularly wireless network in homes. With the network, you can get the flexibilities in the way you work and spend your time with the computers and other electronic devices either in home or office. Basically there are two types of networks you can choose from – wired and wireless networks or even you can combine both to form a single network. With the wired network, communication happened through network cables using the Ethernet technology. While in wireless network, communication happened through radio waves.

Wireless network uses radio waves rather than wired for the transmission medium. With wireless network, you can get the freedom from the restriction of wires or a fixed connection to the network. Wireless network is known as Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) which allows you roam with your wireless networking devices within the network coverage. Wireless networks are now provided freely in certain public areas such as in the campuses, airports, or in the cafe.

To share the internet, you need a wireless router. Connect the wireless router’s WAN port to the Ethernet port of the modem using the UTP cable (that comes with the modem). Or you can attach a USB storage device to share to the network. You cannot use the USB hub to attach both USB printer and USB storage at the same time to share. Security

Wireless computer networking allows you to connect the computers via a wireless access point without a networking cable. Today, wireless networking in homes becomes popular tasks replacing traditional wired LAN because the portability reason and easiness in installation.

What You Need?

Firstly you need to identify your exiting modem in home, assuming that you have subscribed the broadband internet from your ISP. In some regions, the ISPs provide a compact modem (either Cable or DSL modem) which does not have the firewall or router feature. The firewall includes the NAT (network address translation) feature which translates the private network IP addresses into the public IP addresses. To configure the router, firstly you need to connect one computer (with NIC adapter enabled) to one of the LAN Switch ports of the router. Turn on the router and the computer, and then run the Installation CD that comes with the router. Follow the installation wizard and you should follow the “Quick Installation Guidelines” of the router to complete the configuration. By default the router should be operational with minimum security because the wireless security is disabled by default. Fist thing that you should change is the router password and SSID name. SSID is the service set ID which is the network name of your wireless network.

What about the client computers?

Wireless computer networking with the wireless router, you should enable the DHCP feature of the router. If you know nothing about the DHCP services, just leave the default setting. Mostly all the wireless routers are enabled by factory default. In Windows based computers, you should configure the TCP/IP property to obtain the IP address automatically. By default, all new installation of the Windows XP and later based computers are configured to automatic setting in their TCP/IP property. With the TCP/IP property configured to “obtain the IP address automatically”, your computers will receive the IP address configuration automatically from the DHCP services of the router. Therefore, you do not need to worry of the complexities of providing manual setting of the static IP addresses.
