We elected them, didn’t we?
There’s something fundamentally not right when politicians use their positions of power to inflict their own personal agenda on the rest of Australia when the majority of Australians have an opposing view.
John Howard refused to say “sorry” to the nation’s indigenous population despite an overwhelming populist movement to do so.
Kevin Rudd eventually did apologise, and did the sky fall in?
Ah, no.
Today, Kevin Rudd has declared that he is fundamentally against marriage being made available to same sex couples despite an overwhelming majority of Australians now supporting gay marriage.
”We went to the last election being very clear-cut about our position on marriage under the Marriage Act being between a man and a woman,” he said.
Mr Rudd always likes to use ‘the royal we’ to add weight to his position where in fact he should really be saying “I went to the last election with a very clear cut position.”
Neverthless his position is fundamentally and categorically discriminatory. There is no rational argument to support the idea that marriage should not be an option available to same sex couples.
It is hard to avoid reaching the conclusion that the prime minister’s position on this matter is pure and simply his own personal opinion, and that he is seeking to impose his views on everyone else.
It is simply duplicitous for the prime minister on one hand to talk about equality for all Australians and ending discrimination while simultaneously denying a minority of the population access to a status of recognition that is made available to others.
His position is particularly tenuous and irrational when the majority of Australians hold an opposing view. We live in a democracy after all, and surely it is the responsibility of our elected representatives to represent and act upon the interests of the electorate.
It’s about time that Mr Rudd put aside his personal beliefs and recognise that gay and lesbian couples are no less worthy than opposite sex couples when it comes to recognition of their relationships.
To maintain his existing position is an affront to the Australian community he supposedly represents and is disingenuous to say the least.
Reb, he’s too scared of the perceived political fallout to support such a change to dogmatic tradition…& of course his professed allegiance to the Invisible Sky Wizard wouldn’t be helping any.
He needs to lose the prejudice & grow a pair, but he won’t.
Kevin Rudd believes in everything, and nothing at all. He’s a fiscal conservative, and a Keynsian. He’s a progressive, and a social conservative. He sniffs the political wind and adopts whatever position he believes is the popular one. As an in tellectual, Kevin Rudd is child-like, as demonstrated by his two infamous ‘essays’.
The Prime minister of Australia is a phony.
I have just sent a mass of emails to various delegates at the coming ALP National Conference and my local federal member after reading Rodney Croome’s latest blog post:
http://www.rodneycroome.id.au/comments?id=2984_0_1_0_C
Part of my email said, “I DO NOT like my treatment as a member of a minority to be dictated by parliamentarians’ religious beliefs nor by very noisy religious organisations (what business is it of theirs? Marriage to a same sex partner will not be compulsory nor will religious organisations be forced to marry gay people.)”
The A-G is also supporting Rudd’s view:

Reb, the PM apologised but has the Aboriginal lot improved?
The PM is an exponent of talk and little action but when there is action it turns to shit!
I believe the PM is trying to be all things to everyone but pleases none, there is a definite lack of any conviction which is not leadership material.
FFS, this is the twenty first century and I will not accept the fact that gay couples can not have their relationships recognised, in fact I’m going to write it into the charter of the new political party that I’m organising!
“The Prime minister of Australia is a phony.”ToSY
That makes it 2 in a row now.
Is it a requirement of the job?
“I’m going to write it into the charter of the new political party that I’m organising!”
The new leaders of Crapperville – http://img170.imageshack.us/i/51jb4etkrxlkk5.jpg/
What’s goin’ on with the avatars, man? They’re, like, all over the place and it’s really freakin’ me out.
Tom, that photo looks like the PM and the Treasurer in their younger (Heiner) days.
And just back on topic –
Australia does not discriminate on the basis of religion, sex, sexual preferences, race…
Except when it comes to things that the government wants to discriminate about, like how people give effect to their mutually agreed, adult, consensual relationships.
This is outrageous for the ALP, which ought to have more regard for its history in supporting progressive social issues.
Stop it Tom – that’s the 3rd time this week you’ve made sense
Just jokin’, but your comments have been a bit more rational and a little less just sh!tstirring lately – turned over a new leaf?
“your comments have been a bit more rational..”
Don’t worry, it won’t last.
These Aussie ads from Equal Love supporting gay marriage are quite good:

Fuck me. This is the sort of bollocks we’re up against:
http://www.acl.org.au/pdfs/load_pdf_public.pdf?pdf_id=1362&from=NATIONAL
…and people wonder why I have no time for Christians…
I see the media release has a contact mobile number… just in case anyone wishes to make contact…
Please give Glynis our warm regards.
They’re just trying to get into heaven reb, & if baseless judgement about the lifestyles of people they’ll never know on a personal level is how they buy their tickets to reach the Invisible Sky Wizard then so be it; they have bipartisan support to further their archaic bigotry.
T-Boss, they’re a pack of c****. All of them. Just C****. With a capital “C”.
Amen.
If they had an email address I’d send ‘em some delightful thinking music for you.
Well Glynis left her mobile phone number. It would be an awful travesty if that ended up on some toilet wall somewhere.
Hmmmmm.
I want to post Glynis some snogglies.
These people are frustrated that they can’t get a root.
This what Kevin Rudd had to say at the ALP Conference:
“Inclusion” rather than “exclusion?”
“Fairness for all?”
It just reeks of rank hypocrisy.
Reb, the PM is a phony that would lick the feet of any demographic to remain in power and all others can get stuffed!
His words are just spin that said often enough is believed…he’s no leader!
I has written to his Ruddness…
Nice letter Reb.
Think I might even plagiarise it!
Wow, good one, Reb. Hugs to ya mate!
Reb, good luck with the letter but a bit of advice.
It is best to go through your local member if he/she is Labor as the PM is a stickler for process and Harris deletes anything he sees fit so you will need a lot of luck.
My favourite tactic that has worked 90% of the time is to CC the Email to the Opposition, the relevant minister and the local member all at once.
Oh, be a little more diplomatic as the PM is a precious flower who’s ego is easily dented, he needs to march in the next Mardi Gras to toughen up a bit!
Marriage Act 1961
5 Interpretation
marriage means the union of two people to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life (provided that a maximum, and a minimum, of one (1) penis is applicable per marriage).*
*note – additional clarification provided by Tom
Good point Tom.
Maybe the PM should insist that marriage vows be changed to reinforce his position:
“Does your penis take this vagina…”

McClelland defends new anti-terrorism laws
Let’s face it, politicians are inclined to get into the “big swinging d!ck” competition about toughness on “terrorists”. There is little doubt that both parties would believe that there are easy votes in “toughness”.
There will be a new mantra ‘no one lost an election by pretending to be tough (substitute favourite limitation on civil liberties).
An endless spiral. Fair point Adrian.
I can only presume you noted my post earlier today!
Yeah Adrian, I agree (there you go Tom).
FWIW, my hackles are up too regarding what the next conservative government might pull; despite Tony’s incredulence.
Labor should be smacked hard for not shutting down the opportunity that those laws present to either ideology.
The laws, as you say, once there will NEVER be repealed by either side because they represent to convenient a tool of control for any opportunistic government.
I’d rather take my chances with the terroristsTM.
About bloody time this was changed, and shame on anyone who thinks we should continue to discriminate against them.
See you at the rally tomorrow!
